Insurance Tips PDF Print E-mail
In the world of "Post-Katrina" New Orleans has seen a spike in insurance premiums. But below are some tips that may help you save some money.
  • Ask for a higher deductible, maybe $5,000 instead of $1,000, but check with your lender first, they may have a maximum of $1,000.
  • You can also ask for a higher "wind and hail" deductible. The typical wind and hail deductible is 2-5% of the policy total, meaning if you have a $200,000 house and you have wind damage (i.e. a Hurricane, Tropical Storm or any wind damage) your deductible at 5% would be $10,000. If you raise this deductible to 10% it would cost you $20,000 for the same claim.
  • You also have the option of "regular coverage" for your contents or "replacement cost" coverage.
  • If you decide against replacement cost coverage then you will save a few dollars, however this means that they will pro-rate your contents.EXAMPLE: if you have a sofa that is destroyed and it is 10 years old they might determine that it is only worth $50, because they pro-rate it. But if you have "Replacement cost" coverage then they have to pay you for what it would cost to buy a new sofa.

This is just a few ways to save money, but of course if you save money in the beginning you may be paying for it in the end.

Also...don't forget to buy FLOOD INSURANCE, this is a MUST!
